Jay JFRE is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and multidisciplinary creative whose work bridges neo-soul, jazz, and contemporary Black expression. Known for her goddess-like presence and expansive vocal range, she is widely regarded as one of the most compelling female voices of her generation.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in South Brunswick, New Jersey, Jay JFRE was shaped by a rich cultural landscape and a powerful lineage of sound. Growing up in New Jersey, a true melting pot of music, she was influenced by legends such as Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, the Fugees, Queen Latifah, Kool & The Gang, and Dionne Warwick. These influences, paired with a deeply musical family background spanning gospel, jazz, blues, neo-soul, and hip hop, laid the foundation for her artistry. Her mother was celebrated locally as a powerful gospel soprano, while her father was respected in the Hip Hop scene as a gifted DJ. Jay JFRE is also the great-great niece of iconic blues legend Bessie Smith, a legacy her family hears echoed in the power and depth of her voice though her sound remains unmistakably her own.
She began formal musical training at a young age under the guidance of her family and continued her development after relocating to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. There, she studied at the same preparatory institution attended by Missy Elliott, where she distinguished herself as the only female percussionist, performing in advanced ensembles including Classical Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Marching Band, while simultaneously studying voice. During this time, she also began developing her interest in performance based storytelling and acting, laying the groundwork for her expansion into screen and stage work. Her dedication earned her multiple accolades, including “Next Rising Star” and “Best Songwriter,” marking the early stages of a promising career.
Following her preparatory training, Jay JFRE immersed herself in the local arts community, quickly becoming a standout performer and crowd favorite. Her dynamic presence led to numerous opportunities to headline shows throughout the region, as well as participate in theatrical and performance driven productions that further sharpened her acting range. Seeking continued growth as both a musician and collaborator, she joined the band Fortresses, led by acclaimed jazz composer Zachary Hines II. Under his leadership, she has been continually challenged and nurtured within a collective rooted in big band jazz, neo-soul, and Afrobeat influences, an experience that continues to shape her artistic evolution.
Committed to expanding her technical and creative knowledge, Jay JFRE later attended Full Sail University, majoring in Audio Production with minors in Graphic Design and Videography. This multidisciplinary foundation led her to establish JFRE Entertainment & Design Media (JFRE EDM), a creative company through which she oversees music production, creative direction, visual design, media development, and artist services. Through JFRE EDM, she curates projects, produces events, and develops cohesive creative ecosystems for artists, brands, and cultural initiatives.
Over the past decade, Jay JFRE has remained a pillar in her community, serving as a creative director, performer, actress, curator of showcases and events, and mentor to emerging artists focused on artistic development and performance excellence. Her work has been recognized by local organizations and audiences alike, leading to performances and headlining appearances at festivals such as the Neon Festival, Hampton African American Heritage Festival, and Next at the CAN Juneteenth Festival, as well as out of state showcases including Art Loves Philly and Cast Studios in Pennsylvania as well as Brooklyn Music Kitchen in Brooklyn New York.
Beyond performance, she has collaborated with civil rights organizations and political leaders, including the NAACP and Congressman Bobby Scott, U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District using her voice, presence, and creative leadership to support community focused initiatives.
In addition to her work in music, acting, and creative production, Jay JFRE is a published author. She released her first book, Fre Mujer, followed by Jah In Jasper, a poetic body of work that explores identity, memory, and emotional landscape through a literary lens. Both titles are available on Amazon. She has also expanded into fashion and modeling, working with Montreal-based celebrity plus size model Nao Seychelles.
A true multi creative and cultural architect, Jay JFRE continues to build a body of work rooted in legacy, discipline, and vision bridging sound, story, and visual art leaving a lasting imprint across music, media, and community spaces, with much more yet!
